GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES WINDFALL TAXES ON OIL; DISCOURAGES GOLD IMPORTS

(ICE) – ROMA, 8 LUG – The Indian government has announced measures aimed at assuring adequate domestic fuel supply amid rising global shortages and containing the rising import bill from gold imports. The measures announced include: – Lower domestic prices have incentivized refiners to export products at higher prices, resulting in domestic fuel shortages. Therefore, an export tax (special additional excise duty) has been imposed by the government on petrol, diesel, and jet fuel (ATF) shipped overseas in the amounts of INR 6/lt, INR 13/lt, and INR 6/lt, respectively. – An additional tax worth INR 23,250 per tonne, on crude oil produced domestically by large conglomerates/refiners (that produce more than 2mn barrels of oil annually), has been imposed to lower windfall gains from high international crude prices. According to Moody’s Investors Service the taxes imposed on domestic crude oil and fuel exports will generate close to $12 billion for the government in the remainder of the current fiscal. – The import duty on gold has been increased to 15%, from 10.75%, to curb gold imports, narrow the current account deficit and ease currency depreciation pressures. While these moves are beneficial at the margin, they are unlikely to materially alter the widening of the current account deficit over the coming year. Analysts expect a positive impact on the centre’s fiscal finances by INR1.1trn (0.4% of GDP), but also take into consideration the uncertainty of whether these taxes will sustain throughout the year.

DMCC POSTS STRONGEST EVER FIRST-HALF YEAR PERFORMANCE REGISTERING MORE THAN 1,40

(ICE) – ROMA, 4 LUG – The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre has seen continued interest in its crypto centre and high volumes of trade for diamonds, tea and coffee The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) has seen its strongest first-half year performance since it was set up in 2002. DMCC registered a record 1,469 new companies in the first six months of 2022, a 19 percent increase over the same period last year. The flagship free zone said the growth was driven by strong commodities trade and the continued appetite for the DMCC Crypto Centre, along with the ease of setting up and doing business at DMCC. The strong performance follows a record-breaking 2021, in which DMCC attracted 2,485 companies. DMCC is now home to over 21,000 businesses. In June alone, DMCC welcomed 323 new businesses to its free zone and business district, the best monthly performance since its inception. UAE now the world’s biggest rough diamond hub, trading over $22.8bn in 2021
This followed on from the record-breaking 2021, in which DMCC attracted 2,485 new members. This persistent growth was driven by strong demand from international markets including Europe, China, and India, demonstrating Dubai’s continued commercial appeal. Growth was also buoyed by continued interest in the DMCC Crypto Centre, and high volumes of trade for a range of commodities, predominantly diamonds, tea and coffee. Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DMCC, said the centre was constantly striving to further enhance Dubai’s status as a hub for doing business across the globe. “With our facilities and services truly representing the centre of global commodities trade, DMCC continues to be a core partner to its members, having a significant positive impact on the emirate’s thriving economy,” he added.
